On 13^th-15^th November 2020, the Department of Statistics and Data Science (the Department of STAT-DS) held the “2020 Annual Strategic Planning and Development Seminar” in Huizhou, and conducted an academic symposium with the Huizhou University (HU). There were more than 30 faculty members from the Department of STAT-DS and the HU attended the symposium.

On the afternoon of 13^th November, Prof. Jianqing Shi from the Department of STAT-DS started with an academic talk entitled “Predictive Models for Big Data Case Studies” to the faculties and students in HU following by a symposium between the Department of STAT-DS and the school of Mathematics and Statistics. At the symposium, Prof. Qi-Man Shao, the Department Head of STAT-DS, Prof. Yizhi Chen and Prof. Shuiping Yang, the Dean and Associate Dean of the school of Mathematics and Statistics of HU, introduced the historic development, the faculties and student education of each department respectively. Later they had an in-depth discussion about the program construction, the development of new majors. Particularly, the Department of STAT-DS and the HU shared experiences on the curriculum design of the Data Science and Big Data Technology major, student education and career development.

At the meeting, both Prof. Qi-Man Shao and Prof. Yi-Zhi Chen agreed to strengthen the cooperation and information sharing between SUSTech and HU in terms of student education, teaching methodologies.

On 14^th-15^th November, the “2020 Annual Strategic Planning and Development Seminar” of the Department of STAT-DS was held as scheduled. 

Department Seminar

At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Qi-Man Shao analyzed and summarized the development of the Department of STAT-DS from 2019 to 2020. Then he put forward development blueprint regarding high-level talent personnel recruitment, scientific research and program development based on the “14^th Five-Year Development Plan”. 

Prof. Guoliang Tian, the Associate Chair, responsible for undergraduate teaching, gave a summary report on undergraduate teaching performance and students’ enrolment results in Inner Mongolia. Regarding the SUSTech students’ enrolment work in 2020, the Department of STAT-DS won the first prize of the advanced collective enrolment work, and Prof. Guoliang Tian won the advanced individual enrolment work award. Prof. Jianqing Shi, in charge of postgraduate teaching, gave a summary report on the postgraduate curriculum, education programs and enrollment work.

At the seminar, the faculty members had warm discussion after each report was given. To ensure that we build and maintain high achieving and positive learning environment, the members came to an agreement that our prospective students must meet our high-level entry criteria”, also iming to achieve high quality of teaching and training. The department should make good use of the school management system and the dual tutorial system. In addition, the faculty also had a discussion on the high-level talent personnel recruitment, the application plan of talent and research project, internal management, budget implementation and so forth.

The “2020 Annual Strategic Planning and Development Seminar” was held by the Department of STAT-DS for the first time. This seminar contributed to deploying the future action plan in the aspects of program design, talent cultivation, teaching, training and research by summing up the past achievements.
