On 5 September 2021, Department of Statistics and Data Science held a welcome and orientation session for newly admitted undergraduate students, including 46 students from two programs: Statistics and Data Science and Big Data Technology. The event was hosted by department vice chair prof. TIAN Guoliang.
Department Chair prof. SHAO Qiman warmly welcome the new students and gave a thorough introduction on the department. The department currently has 14 full-time faculty members (3 of them will join soon) and 4 jointly appointed professors, their areas of research include mathematical statistics, biostatistics, financial statistics and data science. Prof. Shao stated that the department aims at becoming a first-class department of Statistics and Data Science worldwide.

Prof. Shao then introduced the faculty members of the department. Most of them attended the orientation sessions and presented themselves to new students.

Prof. Tian gave a thorough introduction on the program in Statistics, including the placement of past graduates (whether they choose to pursue further education or enter industry), current students and the curriculum. He advice on how to arrange core course properly and make plans for future study.

Prof. YANG Lili introduced the new program in Data Science and Big Data Technology. She illustrated the curriculum, career prospect, course requirements and etc. of the program.

Two student representatives gave sharing talks to welcome new students. ZHAI Yibo, the senior year student shared his experiences on having interviews with prestigious universities and gave advice to present sophomore year students to always plan ahead, adjust yourself to competitions and etc. YANG Letian, the junior year student took her summer internship as an example to show gratitude to the support from the department and advised new students to take good advantage of summer break and prepare themselves for enjoying the amazing world outside campus.

During the Q&A session, faculty members answered questions regarding mentor selecting, curriculum, oversea exchange programs and etc. from new students. They further communicated during tea break and networking session.
The welcome and orientation session lasted for more than 2 hours, it helped prepare newly admitted students to succeed in and out of the classroom, gave them a glimpse into the department and get the necessary information and helpful advice before the start of a new semester.
