The 2022 Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Statistics and Data Science Academic Symposium had been successfully held by SUSTech International Center for Mathematics and SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science from 21st to 22nd May at College of Science conference hall. The symposium attracted renowned experts and scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, Renmin University of China, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Chinese University of Hong Kong, to meet online and in person, updating their scientific research in the field of statistics and data science.

The associate Professor Xuejun JIANG, from the SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science, presided the opening ceremony. The welcome speech was delivered by Professor Jiping ZHANG, the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the executive director of SUSTech International Center for Mathematics, and by Qiman SHAO, the Chair Professor and Department Chair of SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science. Professor ZHANG expressed warm welcome to the guests and appreciation to the achievements SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science had accomplished since its establishment. He also showed expectation to the profound development of SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science according to the blueprint of SUSTech and development trend of statistics.

Chair Professor Qiman SHAO, as the Department Chair, expressed his sincere gratitude to the scholars who attended the symposium, as well as to their ongoing support in the development of SUSTech Department of Statistics and Data Science. He had been looking forward to strengthening the communication and collaboration with other universities and departments through the meeting, aiming to achieve milestone developments of statistics and data science. By the end of the opening ceremony, associate Professor Xuejun JIANG had introduced the academic committee of the conference, honoured guest speakers and attendees.

During the symposium, 25 scholars had given enlightening reports, including Professor Hansheng WANG at Peking University, Professor Weidong Liu at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Fang YAO at Peking University, Professor Xueqing WANG at University of Science and Technology of China. Scholars and experts shared their latest research findings and had further discussion about the development, opportunities and challenges of statistics and data science.

The symposium had been well scheduled with a variety of impressive content related to statistics and data science, which attracted more than 400 online participants including professors and students from different subjects and background, while offline attendees need to be controlled within 50 due to the Covid-prevention consideration. The symposium provided a convenient and efficient communication platform for scholars to share their latest research results about statistics and data science as well as enhance its integration with related subjects.
