The Inaugural 2021 Shenzhen International Conference on Biostatistics held in SUSTech

On 21 and 22 August 2021, the inaugural Shenzhen International Conference on Biostatistics, jointly hosted by Department of Statistics and Data Science (Stat-DS), SUSTech and Center for Biostatistics, College of Science, SUSTech, was held at convention center in SUSTech. The conference gathered 16 leading researchers from prestigious universities around the world in the field of Biostatistics, to present and discuss their latest research and the hot topics in related fields.

 

SUSTech Acting Vice President GU Dongfeng delivered a speech via video. He warmly welcomed the attendees on behalf of the University and congratulated the opening of the inaugural Shenzhen International Conference on Biostatistics. He expressed his hope that the Center for Biostatistics, College of Science will continue to promote interdisciplinary interaction between Statistics, Data Science, Biology, Chemistry, Medicine and other related disciplines, strengthen collaboration between the academia and the industry, and contribute on developing a first-tier and world-class discipline of Biostatistics, therefore to meet the national and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s strategy needs.

Dean of College of Science YANG Xueming also gave a speech via video. He emphasized that the College of Science will work with the Center for Biostatistics on leveraging the talent resource and advantage in technology development of SUSTech and Shenzhen, to push forward research of interdisciplinary colloboration,  to build a world-leading research base on Biostatistics and provide solutions for the development of biology and medical technology.

Head of department of Stat-DS Prof. SHAO Qiman delivered a speech in the opening ceremony. He expressed sincere gratitude to all attendees and welcomed them on behalf of the department. He stressed that the center for Biostatistics, lead by director SHI Jian Qing, will continue to cultivate talent in the field of Biostatistics, promote exchange and cooperation between the industry, hospitals and universities. The Center will strive to fully utilize analytic techniques in Statistics and Data Science to contribute on the research and development of life science and public health.

Prof. Xihong Lin, Professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the 2006 Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) Presidents’ Award Laureate, and Prof. Chris Homes, Professor at University of Oxford and director of the Health and Medical Sciences Programme at the Alan Turing Institute gave plenary talks at the conference. Other 14 well-known experts in the field of biostatistics from prestigious universities in China gave invited talks  respectively and answered the questions, including Prof. FANG Jiqian at Sun Yat-sen University, Prof. LAI Yinglei at George Washington University and University of Science and Technology of China, Prof. LV Hui at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. OU Chunquan and Prof. PENG Zhihang at Southern Medical University, Prof. QIN Guoyou at Fudan University, Prof. WANG Xueqin at University of Science and Technology of China, Prof. XU Wangli at Renmin University of China, Prof. XUE Fuzhong at Shandong University, Prof. YAN Fangrong at China Pharmaceutical University, Prof. YU Zhangsheng at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. YU Zuguo at Xiangtan University, Prof. ZHAO Yang at Nanjing Medical University, Prof. ZHOU Xiaohua at Beijing University.

The two-day conference facilitates the exchange of ideas and knowledge in the field of biostatistics, with the aim to promote further discussions on latest development for researchers and professionals in the related fields and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in the big data era.
